This is a recommended starting range based on general viewing-distance guidelines — personal preference and room layout still matter. Always check the room itself before buying.
How Viewing Distance and TV Size Relate
The comfortable distance to sit from a TV isn't a single number — it scales with the screen's diagonal size, and it changes depending on resolution. A higher-resolution screen packs more detail into the same physical size, so you can sit closer before individual pixels become visible, while a lower-resolution screen needs more distance to look sharp. This calculator works in either direction: tell it your TV size and it recommends a distance, or tell it your distance and it recommends a size.
Why the Recommended Range Matters More Than a Single Number
Within the recommended range, the exact spot you choose is genuinely a matter of preference — the near end of the range gives a more immersive, cinema-like feel, while the far end is easier on the eyes for long viewing sessions. Sitting closer than the range's minimum makes individual pixels or scan lines noticeable and can make fast motion uncomfortable to track; sitting farther than the maximum means the screen no longer fills enough of your field of view to feel immersive.
Planning the Rest of the Room
Once you know your TV size and viewing distance, the same general spacing principles from our guide to choosing furniture that actually fits your room apply to placing the seating itself. If you're planning the whole living room around the new TV, the free HOMEQIA Smart Room Planner can help with sofa and rug sizing for the same space.
How far should I sit from my TV?
It depends on both screen size and resolution. As a general guideline, sit 1.5–2.5 times the screen's diagonal size away for 1080p, 1–1.5 times for 4K, and 0.5–1 times for 8K — higher resolutions let you sit closer without seeing individual pixels.
Does TV resolution really change the ideal viewing distance?
Yes. A higher-resolution screen packs more pixels into the same physical size, so you can sit closer before those pixels become individually visible. The same 65" TV has a noticeably closer comfortable distance in 4K than in 1080p.
What TV size should I buy for my room?
Measure the distance from where you'll actually sit to the wall where the TV will go, then use that distance with this calculator to get a recommended size range for your resolution — rather than guessing based on the room's overall square footage.
Is bigger always better for a TV?
Not beyond the recommended range for your viewing distance and resolution. A screen larger than the upper end of that range can make fast motion harder to track comfortably and force noticeable eye movement to see the whole picture.
