Clearance Needed
These are general guidelines, not building codes — always check your local accessibility codes for required clearances if that applies to your project.
Why Clearance Matters More Than Floor Space
Two rooms with the exact same square footage can feel completely different depending on how much clearance is left between pieces. A room can look "full" on paper and still feel comfortable if the walkways are wide enough, or look sparsely furnished and still feel cramped if nothing has room to breathe. Clearance is often the missing number in a furniture plan — most people measure the furniture and the room, but forget to check the gaps between them.
How These Numbers Were Chosen
Each situation above reflects a widely used interior design guideline — the kind covered in depth in our guide on choosing furniture that actually fits your room. They're starting points for comfort, not hard rules: a studio apartment might need to work with a tighter secondary walkway, while a formal dining room might warrant more than the minimum. Use these numbers to sanity-check a layout, then adjust for how the space actually gets used.
Planning a Full Room Layout
If you're furnishing an entire room rather than checking one specific gap, the free HOMEQIA Smart Room Planner builds a full layout — furniture sizes, rug size and a visual diagram — starting from your room's dimensions.
How much walkway space do I need in a room?
36 in is the standard minimum for a main walkway, like the path from a doorway to a hallway. A secondary or occasional walkway, such as the space behind a sofa against a wall, can go down to 24 in.
How much space should I leave around a bed?
Leave 24–30 in on each side of the bed for walking room and getting in and out comfortably. This also leaves enough space for a nightstand on at least one side.
How much clearance does a dining table need?
Leave at least 36 in between the table's edge and the nearest wall or furniture, so a chair can be pulled all the way out and someone can walk behind a seated diner.
Are these clearance numbers official building code requirements?
No — these are general interior design guidelines for comfort, not building codes. If your project needs to meet accessibility or code requirements, always check your local building code for the required clearances.
