How many people do you want to seat?

Choose the number of regular diners — not counting the occasional extra guest.

How Table Shape Changes What You Need

Seat count alone doesn't determine table size — shape matters just as much. A rectangular table seats people efficiently along its long sides, which is why it scales well up to 12 people in a manageable footprint. A round table has no corners to work around and often reads as more open in a small room, but it scales less efficiently — a round table for 10 or more people needs a diameter most homes don't have room for. Square tables sit between the two, practical for small counts but unusually large beyond 6 seats.

Why the Room Size Matters as Much as the Table

A table that's the right size for its seat count can still be the wrong choice if the room can't fit it with proper clearance. This calculator adds 36 in of walkway clearance on every side of the table footprint — the same guideline covered in our broader guide on choosing furniture that actually fits your room — so the room-size recommendation reflects a table you can actually walk around and pull chairs out from, not just one that technically fits inside four walls.

Planning the Rest of the Room

If you're furnishing the whole room, not just the table, the free HOMEQIA Smart Room Planner can help with general dining-room layout starting from your room's actual dimensions instead of seat count.

What size table do I need to seat 6 people?

For a rectangular table, roughly 60–72 in long by about 38 in wide. For round, 54–60 in diameter. Square tables for 6 run large (60–66 in per side), so rectangular or round is usually the more practical choice at that count.

Is a round or rectangular table better for a small room?

Round tables often work better in tight or awkward-shaped rooms since they have no corners to navigate around, and a round table typically needs a nearly square room footprint rather than a long rectangular one.

How much space do I need around a dining table?

Leave at least 36 in of clearance between the table's edge and the nearest wall or furniture, so chairs can be pulled out fully and someone can walk behind a seated diner.

How many people can a round table actually seat comfortably?

Round tables work well up to about 8 people. Beyond that, the diameter needed becomes impractically large for most homes, and a rectangular or oval table seats the same number in a more space-efficient footprint.
