What size bed do you have or want?
We'll work out the minimum room size to fit it comfortably.
Do you need room for a dresser too?
A dresser needs its own wall space plus room to open the drawers.
Your Minimum Room Size
This is a minimum recommended footprint based on general bedroom layout guidelines — not an exact requirement. A larger room simply gives you more flexibility in where things go.
Why Start From the Bed Instead of the Room
Most people already know what bed they have, or what size they want, before they know whether their room can actually fit it well. Working backward from the bed size — rather than starting with your room's dimensions and seeing what fits — answers a more direct question: is this room big enough for the bed I want, with room to actually walk around it and use a nightstand on each side?
Why the Dresser Matters
A lot of bedroom planning stops at the bed and nightstands, but most bedrooms also need to fit a dresser somewhere. This calculator adds a dresser's depth to the room's minimum length when you ask for one, on the assumption it sits along the foot wall where the existing foot-of-bed clearance already doubles as room to open its drawers — so you get one straightforward number instead of trying to work out where a dresser squeezes in afterward.
Furnishing the Rest of the Room
For general bedroom furniture sizing beyond the bed itself, see the free HOMEQIA Furniture Size Calculator, or use the Smart Room Planner if you'd rather start from your room's actual dimensions.
What is the minimum room size for a queen bed?
About 13 x 9.3 ft for the bed alone with proper clearance on both sides and at the foot, or roughly 13 x 10.8 ft if you also want room for a dresser.
How much space do I need on each side of the bed?
40-56 in depending on bed size, which includes room for a nightstand plus enough walking space to get in and out of bed comfortably. Larger beds need more side clearance since the room itself needs to feel balanced, not cramped around a bigger piece of furniture.
Can a king bed fit in a small bedroom?
It depends on the room's actual width, not just whether the bed itself fits. A king bed alone needs roughly 15.3 ft of width once you add clearance for nightstands and walking space on both sides — below that, you'll likely need to drop one nightstand or size down the bed.
Does this include closet space?
No — this calculator covers the bed, nightstands, walking clearance and an optional dresser. If your room also needs to fit a closet door's swing path, check the door clearance situation in the free HOMEQIA Furniture Clearance Calculator.
